Why More Women Solo Travelers Should Consider River Cruising

River cruises are perfect for solo women. Period.

When I travel solo, there are two things I prioritize: convenience and safety. And for me, river cruising delivers both. Picture spending your mornings sailing down Portugal’s Douro River while relaxing in a heated pool, followed by afternoons exploring charming small towns or enjoying wine tastings in the Douro Valley. Or imagine walking through the streets of Angkor Ban in Cambodia before returning to the comfort of your cabin at the end of the day. Nothing to plan. Nothing to unpack and repack. You simply get to enjoy the experience.

That is one of the things I love most about river cruising. River cruises are similar to ocean cruises in the sense that your accommodations travel with you. You can visit multiple destinations without the hassle of constantly changing hotels, coordinating transportation, or figuring out how to get from one city to the next.

But there is one major difference between river cruises and ocean cruises: river ships are much smaller, while still being accessible to the average traveler. Whether that is a benefit or a negative depends entirely on the type of travel experience you're looking for. Personally, I love it.

With fewer than 200 guests on many river cruises, you get to know the people around you, and quite quickly. The atmosphere feels more intimate, and fellow travelers tend to become familiar faces by the end of the first few days. I'm a very social person, and I enjoy travel most when it's a shared experience.

There is something special about sitting down for dinner and recognizing familiar faces, making plans with people you met earlier that day, or having someone to share a glass of wine with after an incredible excursion. When you're traveling solo, that built-in sense of community can make a huge difference. You still have the freedom to do your own thing, but you're rarely alone unless you want to be.

And then there's the safety and convenience factor. River cruises take you directly into the heart of many cities, towns, and villages, including smaller destinations that you might not otherwise visit on a traditional European vacation or international trip. For me, having a comfortable and familiar home base waiting at the end of every day creates a real sense of ease when traveling solo.

Of course, safety and risk are personal. What feels comfortable to one traveler may feel completely different to someone else, and no form of travel is completely risk-free.

But when I travel solo, I appreciate not having to navigate every logistical detail on my own. I love knowing where I'm sleeping each night. I love not having to figure out how to get back to a hotel across town after a day of exploring. I love that my transportation to the next destination is already handled. And after spending the day exploring somewhere new, I can simply return to my cabin and relax. That convenience gives me the freedom to be more present while I'm traveling.

River cruising also makes incredible destinations feel more accessible. You can explore the culture, food, history, and personality of multiple places without having to build an entirely new itinerary every few days. Whether you're sailing through Europe's famous river regions, exploring Portugal's wine country, visiting historic cities along the Danube, or discovering destinations in Southeast Asia, your journey can feel both immersive and effortless.

For me, river cruising offers the perfect balance between independence and ease. You can spend an afternoon wandering on your own, join a guided excursion, explore with new friends, or stay on board and enjoy the scenery. There is structure when you want it and flexibility when you don't.

And honestly? There is something incredibly luxurious about not having to make every single decision. As someone who plans travel for a living, I love a good itinerary. I love researching restaurants, finding hidden gems, and putting together the perfect trip.

But sometimes, I don't want to be responsible for every detail. Sometimes, I want to wake up, look out the window, and let the destination come to me, which is exactly what river cruising offers. It allows you to experience multiple destinations while unpacking just once. It combines the convenience of having your accommodations and transportation handled with the excitement of discovering somewhere new almost every day. And for solo travelers, the smaller, more social atmosphere can offer the perfect combination of independence, connection, comfort, and convenience.

Whether you're dreaming of sailing through Portugal's Douro Valley, exploring historic towns along Europe's rivers, experiencing Christmas markets on the Danube, or discovering Southeast Asia from a completely different perspective, there is a river cruise experience for so many different types of travelers.
